How to Deal with Low Engagement in a Community

  • 09-03-2023

A community's success hinges upon the involvement of its members, thus if individuals are gathered but remain inactive or uncommunicative, this poses a substantial issue.

As a Community Manager, it is anticipated that you possess a thorough understanding of engagement techniques - catalyzing interaction and sustaining participation among members.

However, it is an unavoidable reality that community engagement is susceptible to fluctuations.

With this article today, our aim is to aid you in navigating periods of diminished or absent engagement.

    Now What

Before you plunge in, please note this:
When the engagement go down in a community:
    1. Take a break: It's okay to take a step back at times, but not for an extended period. The pauses, silences, and breaks are essential for the community to avoid being overly active and noisy all the time. Therefore, it's important to allow for quiet moments, but keep an eye on it not becoming too prolonged.
    2. Refresh your approach: As I mentioned earlier, engagement involves a cycle of success and setbacks. Your strategies may not always be dynamic and thrilling, and they can become dull over time. Regularly monitor the community's response and assess the effectiveness of your strategies. If they are no longer working, make adjustments or try new approaches.
    3. Consider the current state of your community: Along with your strategies, it's crucial to take into account and understand the current phase of your community - is there an upcoming event? Is the team launching a new initiative? Are people on vacation? What's the state of the relevant industry? These factors can guide your strategy implementation.
    4. Seek input from key members: Within your community, there are likely a group of active and engaged members who also assist others. It's important to recognize these individuals and, if necessary, create a private space where you can gather their feedback.
If engagement decreases and intervention is required, engage with these key members and implement their suggestions, or integrate their ideas with your strategies. Keep in mind that they have a unique perspective as part of the community.
    5. Survey the community on their preferences: Gathering feedback directly from the members themselves is the best way to understand their needs. Conduct a general poll and use the results to shape your strategies.
    6. Learn from successful communities: You can always look to other thriving communities for inspiration. Join these communities, stay informed, and adopt strategies to test in your own community. Don't be discouraged if they don't work, continue to experiment, make adjustments, and explore new approaches.

Finally, An extra tip is to maintain a constant thirst for learning - tune in to community podcasts, connect with other community professionals, read articles and newsletters, and find inspiration from shared ideas.
